More than 40 installations in India

Lithuania-based packaging machine manufacturer, Fasa, has made impressive inroads in the dairy product packaging market in India since it established itself in the country little over a decade ago. It has installed more than 40 machines in India at some of the biggest dairy product manufacturing companies. The company was present at the recently concluded India International Dairy Expo (IIDE) 2019, which was held in Mumbai.

“I believe we offer the best price to performance ratio in the market and that is why we think we have succeeded in India. Our most popular product in India is the butter wrapping machine,” says Zivile Algeniene, sales manager, Fasa.

Fasa manufactures packaging machines for primarily packing dairy products. It makes butter wrapping machines, processed cheese filling machines, curd packaging machines, ice-cream packaging machines, cup fillers, thermo formers, bulk fillers and flow pack machines. The manufacturing happens at its plant in Lithuania and almost 98% of the machines produced are exported.

In India its most popular product is the butter wrapping machine. Fasa has installed 43 butter wrapping machines in the country, three processed cheese filling machines and some additional equipment. Some of its customers are Gokul Dairy and Parag Dairy. In India, Fasa distributes its machines through two agents.

Fasa’ butter wrapping machine, ARM, is designed for filling and wrapping butter, margarine, etc. into aluminum foil or parchment paper. Machine modifications cover a wide dosing range from 8 – 1000 gm and a big variety of brick sizes. There are optional features available as well such as dosing unit for direct line feeding, protective machine covers with locking system, central lubrication system, hopper protection sensor, hopper cover with blocking system, heated cutter for margarine, inkjet or thermal date printer and stainless-steel inserts in portion forming table.

Processed cheese filling and wrapping machine – ARU – is an automatic packaging machine for foiling of processed and cream cheese with aluminum foil with or without easy opening system and labeling.

Fasa has also tied up with a Swiss dairy processing company called Egli Process Technology, which makes butter processing lines, butter reworking lines, margarine, spread and shortening lines, among others. In India, Egli is represented by Chennai-based Process Engineering Solutions (PES).

Having achieved an impressive growth in India, Algeniene believes the company can notch up a bigger footprint in the dairy products packaging segment.

“India is one of the world’s largest producers of dairy products, especially butter, and the consumption is also growing very fast because of rising income and growing population. We are confident of gaining more customers in India,” she concludes.

The Covid-19 pandemic led to the country-wide lockdown on 25 March 2020. It will be two years tomorrow as I write this. What have we learned in this time? Maybe the meaning of resilience since small companies like us have had to rely on our resources and the forbearance of our employees as we have struggled to produce our trade platforms.

The print and packaging industries have been fortunate, although the commercial printing industry is still to recover. We have learned more about the digital transformation that affects commercial printing and packaging. Ultimately digital will help print grow in a country where we are still far behind in our paper and print consumption and where digital is a leapfrog technology that will only increase the demand for print in the foreseeable future.

Web analytics show that we now have readership in North America and Europe amongst the 90 countries where our five platforms reach. Our traffic which more than doubled in 2020, has at times gone up by another 50% in 2021. And advertising which had fallen to pieces in 2020 and 2021, has started its return since January 2022.

As the economy approaches real growth with unevenness and shortages a given, we are looking forward to the PrintPack India exhibition in Greater Noida. We are again appointed to produce the Show Daily on all five days of the show from 26 to 30 May 2022.
