Multinational packaging company Amcor has increased the use of advanced recycled materials in its packaging through ExxonMobil’s Exxtend technology.

The company has bought certified circular polyethylene material using the Exxtend technology and will use this to produce sustainable flexible polyethylene packaging.

ExxonMobil’s recycling solution produces commercial volumes of certified circular polymers for various applications.

The polyethylene materials are intended to allow enable Amcor to supply more recycled content for use in healthcare and food industry applications.

In addition, Amcor expects to significantly boost the use of recycled material by using the material.

Increasing the use of circular polymers and other advanced recycling materials is part of the company’s efforts to make all of its packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025.

Amcor used 113,000t of recycled material in its packaging last year.

Amcor chief commercial officer Peter Konieczny said: “Using advanced recycled materials is yet another step forward in Amcor meeting the challenges of our industry and offering our customers more sustainable packaging solutions.

“By leveraging ExxonMobil’s Exxtend technology across our global product portfolio, Amcor is providing a true differentiator for our customers and the environment.”

ExxonMobil’s Exxtend technology offers circular polymers certified according to International Sustainability and Carbon Certification Plus (ISCC PLUS) standards.

The technology allows plastic waste to be converted into new products that are similar to virgin raw materials in quality and performance.

Earlier this year, ExxonMobil completed its first commercial sale of certified circular polymers using the Exxtend technology to Berry Global.

ExxonMobil Polyethylene vice-president David Hergenrether said: “We are proud to see our relationship with Amcor expand with our Exxtend technology to help address their sustainability goals, as well as those of their customers.”

Last month, Amcor revealed plans to scale down its operations in Russia amid the country’s invasion of Ukraine.
